*Wave, no. 1* is an etching and aquatint by Lee R. Chesney, born in 1920, and this impression is signed in pencil by the artist. The Library's record dates it to about 1957 to 1958, a bracketed estimate taken from a caption card rather than a verified source. Etching gives a printmaker crisp linear marks, while aquatint adds soft, tonal areas of ink, a combination well suited to a subject like moving water. The print entered the Library's collection through the Pennell Fund, which supports acquisitions in the Prints and Photographs Division.
