Sailboats on the water make this 1924 poster stand apart from the city views that dominate its series, and they place the destination on the Thames at Twickenham, a riverside town southwest of central London. Edward McKnight Kauffer, an American-born designer, produced much of his best-known commercial work for London's transport companies in the 1920s. The poster was issued from Electric Railway House, the headquarters of the company that ran the city's trams and underground lines, and it encouraged Londoners to reach the river by tram for a day of leisure. Its flat areas of color and simplified shapes reflect the modern graphic style that made Kauffer's posters so recognizable on station walls.
