This print shows a helmet photographed from the front, and the caption card lists it under antiquities, Vikings, and helmets. The record gives no date or maker, so the exact context is unknown. Viking Age helmets were rarely preserved, and the best-known surviving example, the Gjermundbu helmet from Norway, was found in 1943 and is a rounded iron design with no horns. The horned helmet that many people picture came mostly from 19th-century painting, illustration, and stage costume, so a photograph of a helmet like this one is worth reading with that background in mind.
