Lillian Russell, the singer and stage star, sits for this c1897 portrait, which carries a copyright credit to the photographer J. Schloss. By the late 1890s Russell was among the most celebrated performers in American musical theater, having risen through comic opera in the 1880s and become a fixture on Broadway. Her glamorous public image made her one of the most photographed women of the Gay Nineties, and studio portraits like this one helped spread her fame to audiences far from the stage. The record's date and details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
