Hermann Göring, the Luftwaffe chief and one of the most senior figures in the Nazi government, is shown here walking the line of an anti-aircraft battery, the kind of inspection that formed a regular part of his role as head of Germany's rebuilt air force. The record gives only the approximate date of 1938, a period when the Luftwaffe was expanding quickly and anti-aircraft units were a visible sign of that buildup. Photographs like this one were often released as official publicity, so the staging, the uniformed crew and the guns in neat order should be read as deliberate messaging rather than a candid moment.
