Drawn by E.W. Kemble for the February 1905 issue of *Collier's*, "The Vultures' Roost" shows birds of prey gathering over the Senate, a visual charge that trusts, including those in the oil industry, were buying political influence. The cartoon belongs to a wave of anti-trust satire in the Progressive Era, when muckraking journalists exposed corporate pressure on state legislatures, which then chose U.S. senators until the Seventeenth Amendment provided for direct election in 1913. Kemble, best known as the illustrator of Mark Twain's *Huckleberry Finn*, made the accusation of corruption readable at a glance.
