A January 1938 birthday celebration for Hermann Göring is the setting for this picture of Erhard Milch clasping his hand. Milch was the state secretary in the Reich Air Ministry and a key organizer of Germany's rearmament in the air, while Göring, as Reich Minister of Aviation, led the Luftwaffe as it expanded rapidly under the Nazi government. The photograph shows how the top figures of German aviation presented themselves in the years before the Second World War, when the air force was being built up in open defiance of the limits set by the Treaty of Versailles.
