Its title, "Great speech of Clay -- bran bread is riz!!!", uses mock-phonetic spelling to ridicule a speech by Henry Clay, the Kentucky statesman and longtime Whig leader. James Baillie published the lithograph in New York in 1847, and it was probably drawn by John L. Magee. The named subjects include Horace Greeley of the *New York Tribune*, abolitionist editor William Lloyd Garrison, and newspaperman J. Watson Webb, which points to the sharp press rivalries and the divisive debate over the Mexican War that defined the period.
