Watercolor was added by hand to this Currier lithograph of a Grand National Whig banner, which carries the motto "Onward." Nathaniel Currier's New York shop issued many campaign pictures, and this one was deposited for copyright in April 1844, months before the presidential election between Whig nominee Henry Clay and Democrat James K. Polk. Whig rallies that year relied on large banners, parades, and printed emblems to rally voters, so the print shows how the party sought to present itself to the public. Standard catalogues of Currier's work and of American political prints list it, which helps researchers date and place it.
