Its title, *Dividing the National Map*, points to the sectional split that shaped the 1860 presidential race, and the three men named in its record are John Bell, John C. Breckinridge, and Abraham Lincoln. Bell ran for the Constitutional Union party, Breckinridge for the Southern Democrats, and Lincoln for the Republicans, while Stephen A. Douglas, the northern Democratic candidate, also took part in the contest. The lithograph's place of publication is uncertain, though Cincinnati is suggested, and it shows how political cartoons of the period used maps to depict a nation pulling apart before the Civil War.
