Jane Addams, the social reformer who co-founded Hull House in Chicago in 1889, is the subject of this c1914 studio portrait by the Moffett studio, a Chicago firm known for its portraits of public figures. By the time this was made, Addams had become one of the most prominent voices in American progressive reform, working on child labor laws, women's suffrage, and immigrant welfare. In 1915 she would help found the Women's Peace Party, and in 1931 she shared the Nobel Peace Prize. The record notes that its details come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the exact sitting date is best treated as approximate.
