The start of a League of American Wheelmen race, captured around 1890 by Niagara Falls photographer George Barker, shows the riders gathered at the line. The L.A.W., founded in 1880, promoted cycling as a respectable sport and pushed for better roads, and its races drew crowds during the years when the safety bicycle was replacing the older high-wheeled machine. Barker issued his views as stereo cards, which were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth.
