Two sleighs racing along a snowy road form the subject of this hand-colored lithograph, published in New York by N. Currier around 1848. Currier ran one of the busiest print shops of the period, producing inexpensive scenes of American life that reached households across the country. Sleigh racing was a popular winter pastime in the northern states, and prints like this one let viewers who never joined a race share in its excitement. Each sheet was colored by hand after printing, so the finished look varied from copy to copy.
