Few of the firm's winter scenes capture the bite of the cold as well as this hand-colored lithograph, *Winter in the Country: A Cold Morning*. The design comes from George Henry Durrie, a painter known for rural New England farm scenes, and Currier & Ives published it in New York around 1863. The firm sold Durrie's winter landscapes as inexpensive prints that reached households across the country, and the color, added by hand to each impression, gives the snowy fields and farm buildings their warm touches. Today the print offers a window onto how Americans of the Civil War era pictured everyday rural winter life.
