Currier & Ives' 1858 lithograph "The American Fireman: Rushing to the Conflict" shows volunteer firefighters charging toward a blaze, a subject that was a staple of mid-century American printmaking. Volunteer fire companies in cities like New York were rival social clubs as much as public services, and their races to fires often ended in brawls between companies. Currier & Ives produced many such scenes for a popular market, and prints like this one capture both the drama of the work and the rough-and-tumble competition that defined the volunteer era before paid municipal departments took over.
