Corinth, Mississippi, a rail junction in the northern part of the state, was the setting for this hand-colored lithograph of the battle fought there on October 3 and 4, 1862. Union forces under William S. Rosecrans repelled a Confederate assault led by Earl Van Dorn, which ended in a retreat and gave the Union control of a strategically important town. Published by Currier & Ives in New York, the print was one of many battle scenes the firm issued during the Civil War to satisfy public appetite for news from the front. Its bold color and dramatic composition reflect the commercial aim of turning recent events into affordable images for home walls.
