Peter Stuyvesant, the strong-willed director of the Dutch colony, is the figure at the center of this etching of his resignation. In August 1664, an English squadron under Richard Nicolls anchored off Manhattan, and although Stuyvesant wanted to resist, many residents were unwilling to fight the English fleet. The capitulation was signed in early September, and the town was renamed New York in honor of the Duke of York. Made in 1908, the print looks back on that handover as a turning point in colonial American history.
