Titled *Yankee Doodle 1776*, this chromolithograph takes its name from the fife tune Americans linked with the Revolution, and it appeared in the centennial year, when the nation was looking back at its founding. Cleveland publisher J.F. Ryder issued the print from a design by Ohio painter A.M. Willard, whose patriotic scenes were widely reproduced in the 1870s. Chromolithographs like this one were colorful and inexpensive, so they carried a shared picture of the Revolution into homes, parlors, and schoolrooms. Notice how the print looks back at 1776 through the eyes of 1876.
