Louis Maurer's lithograph "Trotting Cracks" on the Snow shows a sleigh race, a winter sport that drew crowds of spectators to frozen roads and open fields in the Northeast. Published by Currier & Ives in New York around 1858, it belongs to a long run of sporting and genre prints the firm sold cheaply to a broad middle-class public. Trotting horses pulling light sleighs were a source of local pride and wagering, and the print captures both the speed of the animals and the excitement of the spectators. Maurer, a German-born artist who worked extensively for Currier, drew many such scenes of American life.
