The bracketed title signals that a cataloguer supplied it, so the wording is not the artist's own. Dated 1884, this etching was printed in green ink on Japanese paper, a pairing that reflects the Japanese-inspired taste running through Western printmaking in the 1880s, when collectors valued the thin, absorbent sheets for their soft, delicate tones. The Library of Congress holds it among its American prints and acquired it by purchase. Its colored printing is worth noticing, since experiments with tinted inks on these papers were a distinctive part of the period's printmaking.
