Daniel Morgan, the Virginia frontiersman who rose to brigadier general in the Continental Army, is the subject of this engraved portrait, a format that let printmakers circulate likenesses of Revolutionary-era figures to a wide public. Morgan earned his reputation leading riflemen in battles such as Saratoga and Cowpens, where his tactics drew on the marksmanship of backcountry fighters. The record gives no date for the print, so it is best understood as a later image made to honor a man who had become a symbol of American resolve. His life, which spanned 1736 to 1802, is worth keeping in view when looking at the portrait.
