A hooded penitent moves through a Peruvian procession in this watercolor, a sight common in Lima and other towns during Holy Week. Penitents often belonged to lay religious brotherhoods, and they covered their faces and undertook acts of devotion such as walking barefoot or carrying heavy loads through the streets. Drawings like this one, made in the 1830s, were popular with European and American travelers, who collected images of local customs in a young republic still settling into independence from Spain.
