An elderly woman in a sunbonnet, the brimmed cloth hat many rural women wore to shield their faces from sun while working outdoors, is the entire subject of this photograph. Dating to about 1930, the print comes from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, where portraits of ordinary American people from this period are kept as a record of everyday life. The sunbonnet had been a common piece of farm and domestic dress for decades by then, and the "no. 1" in the title suggests it was one of a numbered series of studies. Its plain, close framing puts the emphasis on the sitter's face and clothing rather than on any setting.
