A pilgrim dreams he is shedding his armor while a woman holds an ax over him, an unusually dramatic moment for a woodcut. The image comes from Guillaume de Deguilleville's *Le Pélerinage de vie humaine*, a 14th-century French allegorical poem about the soul's journey through life, here in a Dutch edition printed by Jacob Bellaert at Haarlem in 1486. Woodcuts like this helped early readers follow such allegories, and the discarded armor fits the poem's larger theme of giving up worldly burdens.
