A lone man stretches toward the top of an enormous fir log in this view from the Cascade Mountains near Seattle, Washington. Darius Kinsey, a photographer who worked across the Pacific Northwest, made the image around 1899 as part of a body of work documenting the region's timber trade. Photographers of the period often placed people beside huge logs and stumps so that viewers far from the forest could grasp their scale, and here the small figure carries that purpose. The old catalog notes that mention Native people and lumber are unverified, so the man's identity and role remain uncertain.
