Herbert Bayer, the Austrian-born designer trained at the Bauhaus, made this 1949 poster for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, the group behind the March of Dimes. Its title, "a light is beginning to dawn," presents polio research as a promise of hope during years when the disease killed or paralyzed thousands of children and young adults, many of whom depended on iron lungs to breathe. Bayer had settled in New York in 1938, and he brought a modernist sense of design to fundraising art. The poster's bold color and simple imagery reflect how mid-century public health campaigns borrowed the techniques of advertising and avant-garde design.
