Here we see Emperor Hirohito of Japan in full dress uniform, a formal military portrait taken around 1935. Hirohito, born in 1901, had come to the throne in 1926, and by the mid-1930s Japan was expanding its military presence in China, which gave official portraits like this one considerable political weight. The print survives as a reproduction of a photograph kept in an album, so the image reflects how the emperor was presented to the public at the time. Its caption card is unverified, so the exact circumstances of the sitting are not recorded.
