Few prints from the 1850s capture the Second Grinnell expedition, a privately financed voyage sent in 1853 to search for Sir John Franklin's lost crew. Its two ships, the *Advance* and the *Rescue*, sailed under the naval surgeon Elisha Kent Kane, and the party spent two winters trapped in ice off northwest Greenland. The record gives no date for this print, and the shelflist card links it to the name John Sartain, a Philadelphia engraver, though that attribution is unverified. The subject alone shows how closely the public followed the Franklin search in those years.
