Few pictures on this board are as pointed as this 1775 broadside, whose title, *A Dose for the Tories*, takes aim at colonists who remained loyal to the British Crown. The year places it at the very start of the Revolutionary War, when the Massachusetts colonies had just clashed with British troops at Lexington and Concord and public opinion was sharply divided. Broadsides like this were printed to be posted, read aloud, and passed from hand to hand, so they carried political arguments to people who might never buy a pamphlet. Its use of a medicine metaphor shows how colonial printers relied on mockery and ridicule to pressure their neighbors.
