Confederate earthworks rise along the edge of the woods at Palmer's field, on the Orange Turnpike, in this view of the Battle of the Wilderness. That fight in early May 1864 took place in dense second-growth scrub, where visibility was so poor that units often lost their bearings and brush fires swept over wounded men. The record gives no date for the exposure, but the hasty entrenchments reflect the defensive digging both armies carried out as the battle unfolded. Because the picture belongs to Mathew Brady's collection, it offers a rare look at field fortifications in Virginia's wooded terrain.
