Samuel Adams, the Boston organizer who helped rally colonists against Parliament in the 1760s and 1770s, later signed the Declaration of Independence. This steel engraving by H.B. Hall reproduces a painting by Johnston, a method that let 19th-century publishers circulate portraits of Revolutionary leaders in books and periodicals. Steel plates held finer detail and survived longer print runs than copper, which helps explain why engravings like this were so common in that era. The caption card gives no date, so the year of publication remains unconfirmed.
