Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886) was the son and grandson of presidents, and in 1861 he was serving as the United States minister to Great Britain, a post he held through the Civil War. This photographic print captures a man who spent those years in London working to keep the British government from recognizing the Confederacy or aiding it. Adams's diplomacy, carried out largely through dispatches and private meetings, is often cited as an important factor in keeping Britain neutral during the conflict.
