Charles A. Lindbergh, identified here by the nickname "the lone eagle," appears in this halftone print from about 1928, a few months before he became a national figure. The nickname grew out of his solo nonstop flight from New York to Paris in May 1927, which made him the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic and turned him into one of the most recognized men in the world. Halftone reproduction, which broke photographs into tiny dots so they could be printed on newspaper and magazine presses, was the standard way such portraits reached the public in the late 1920s.
