Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president, is the subject of this stereograph, dated to around October 2, 1945, a few months after he succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt on Roosevelt's death in April. Stereo cards like this one were meant to be viewed through a hand viewer, which merged the two nearly identical images into a single three-dimensional scene. The record credits the copyright to Lynn Skeels and notes that its caption details are unverified, so the occasion itself is uncertain. The date falls a month after Japan's surrender ended World War II, when the new president was steering the country through the postwar transition.
