Here the poet's likeness comes through a drawing rather than a camera: a halftone reproduction of a charcoal portrait by the Russian artist A. Tyschler, dated 1945 in the record. Akhmatova, born in 1889, was among the most important voices of Russian poetry in the Silver Age, and by the 1940s she had lived through revolution, censorship and the arrests of her son. Printed reproductions like this one carried such portraits into magazines and books, letting readers see a likeness they would never encounter in the original sheet. The record's details come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the date and attribution are best read as provisional.
