Indianapolis hosted the Prohibition Party's national convention in 1892, and this photograph documents that gathering in the city. The party, founded in 1869, made banning the manufacture and sale of alcohol its central cause, and its delegates that year nominated John Bidwell of California for president. The print was made by Barnum & Cumback, a local Indianapolis photography firm, so it reflects the city's own studio trade of the period. The exact hall and the identities of the people shown are not confirmed here, which makes the image most useful as a view of a third-party political meeting at a time when temperance was drawing wide public debate.
