Walt Whitman appears in a portrait dated around 1887, when the poet was in his late sixties and living in Camden, New Jersey, after a stroke in 1873 had left him partly disabled. The photograph is credited to G.C. Cox on a caption card, and the record notes that those details are unverified. By then Whitman had revised *Leaves of Grass* through many editions, and his bearded, weathered look became the familiar public image of the American poet.
