Taken in 1878, this portrait shows Walt Whitman, the poet of *Leaves of Grass*, in Camden, New Jersey, where he lived after a stroke in 1873 left him partly disabled. The photoprint was made by Napoleon Sarony, a New York studio photographer known for his theatrical and celebrity portraits. Whitman sat for many photographers over his life, and this image belongs to that long series that shaped his public face. The record's details come from a caption card and are marked as unverified, so the exact circumstances of the sitting remain uncertain.
