Erhard Milch was a German aviation official whose career spanned the founding of the Luftwaffe, and this print shows him in the years when he held some of the most powerful posts in Nazi Germany's air program. Milch served as a state secretary in the Air Ministry under Hermann Göring and helped build the air force's industrial base during the late 1930s and early war years. The catalog record gives only a date range of 1939 to 1945 and notes that the caption card data is unverified, so the exact occasion of the portrait is unknown. Milch was later tried at Nuremberg's subsequent proceedings and convicted of war crimes related to slave labor, a verdict worth keeping in mind when viewing wartime portraits of him.
