Bending the foresail, the seaman's task of fastening a sail to its yard before hoisting, is the subject of this engraving, which appeared on page 53 of an 1843 New York edition of Darcy Lever's *The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor*. Lever's manual was first published in England in 1808 as a practical handbook for junior officers, and American reprints like this one helped spread its illustrated lessons in rigging and seamanship. The plate is worth a close look for its details of sailors' posture and rigging, which show how work aboard a sailing vessel was actually carried out.
