Painter Edwin Howland Blashfield sits for this 1915 portrait by Pirie MacDonald, a New York photographer known for his studio portraits of professional men. Blashfield, who lived from 1848 to 1936, was one of the leading muralists of the Beaux-Arts era, when American architects and patrons filled new civic buildings with large allegorical paintings. After training in Paris, he built his reputation on that kind of decorative work, and the portrait captures a figure who helped shape the look of public art in his generation.
