Pictured here is the English novelist Wilkie Collins, photographed in New York in 1874, when he was touring the United States giving public readings. The image comes from Sarony, a New York studio known for portraits of actors, writers, and singers during the period. The print is autographed, a common practice that made such photographs popular with admirers. Collins is best remembered for *The Woman in White* and *The Moonstone*, novels that helped shape sensation fiction and the modern detective story.
