Albert Abraham Michelson, the American physicist shown here, was photographed in 1930, the year before his death. He is best known for the Michelson-Morley experiment of 1887, which measured the speed of light relative to the supposed luminiferous ether and found no detectable difference, a null result that helped set the stage for Einstein's special theory of relativity. Michelson also became the first American to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences, receiving the 1907 prize in physics for his optical precision instruments and the spectroscopic and metrological investigations carried out with them. The portrait is a useful record of a scientist whose careful measurements reshaped modern physics.
