Rather than showing a scene, this 1895 poster leads with the name of a novel's title character, "Miss Traumerei," and builds the design around it. Ethel Reed, a young Boston illustrator and one of the few women working in the new art poster style of the mid-1890s, made it to promote Albert Morris Bagby's novel, published in Boston by Lamson, Wolffe & Co. The design reflects the period's taste for flat color, bold outlines, and decorative lettering, influences drawn largely from Japanese prints and European poster art.
