Few subjects in Christian art were engraved more often than the baptism of Christ in the Jordan, but this sheet is distinguished by its plate, which bears the initials of Martin Schongauer, the German engraver who worked in Colmar in the late 1400s. Schongauer's copperplates were widely copied, and his precise, richly textured line shaped a generation of printmakers, including the young Albrecht Dürer. The back of the sheet carries the collector's mark of George Lothrop Bradley, a reminder of how private collections of early prints were assembled and later passed into public hands. The plate dates from Schongauer's lifetime, but the date of this impression is uncertain.
