Lucas van Leyden signed this 1510 engraving of the baptism of Christ in the Jordan with his initial on the plate, a sign of the young Dutch printmaker's confidence. Born around 1494, he was making engravings while still a teenager, and his finely cut plates were admired across Europe for their precise line and detailed landscape. Baptism scenes like this one, with John the Baptist pouring water over Jesus in a flowing river, gave artists room to render water, rocks and distant figures. Notice the controlled, crisp line that gives even the smallest details clear form.
