Drawn in brown ink over pencil on a small sheet of off-white note paper, this piece carries a handwritten line that explains its purpose: "My hat off to the goodly company I find myself among," signed by W. Heath Robinson and dated November 1914. Robinson was a British illustrator known for elaborate, absurdly complicated machines. The note was made only a few months after the First World War began, so the courteous, slightly wry tone of a tipped hat fits the period's mix of formality and uncertainty. Its place in an autograph collection suggests it was prized as a personal greeting.
