A winch hand, the worker who runs the hoisting gear that lifts cargo from a ship's hold, is the focus of this 1941 print, shown just before unloading begins. The photoprint came from the British Press Service, an agency that distributed wartime photographs from Britain to American newspapers and magazines, and its caption card is unverified, so the exact port and ship are unknown. In 1941, Britain depended heavily on imported food and materials, and the dock crews who unloaded those cargoes were central to the country's war effort.
