Pandacan, a district of Manila along the Pasig River, is the setting for this stereograph of local workers winnowing rice by hand. The card dates to about 1902, when the United States had taken control of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War, and the Universal Photo Art Company issued many such views for American audiences curious about their new possessions. Winnowing separated the grain from its husk by tossing it into the wind, and the stereo pair gives the scene a sense of depth that a single print could not.
