Lucas van Leyden signed this engraving with his initial L and dated it on the plate, a habit that makes its date of 1519 one of the more secure facts about it. The subject, the Fall of Man, comes from the opening chapters of Genesis, where Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit and are cast out of Eden. Lucas was a Dutch artist working in the early sixteenth century, and his prints were widely collected and copied across Europe. Notice the fine, dense hatching he used to model the bodies and foliage, which shows the precision that made engraving a prized medium of the period.
